Invesco Global Sovereign Asset Management Study 2022
In 2022 we find sovereign investors grappling with an inflation shock, rising interest rates and a war in Eastern Europe. This year’s study, the tenth in the series, discusses how these factors are influencing asset allocations and examines the impact on long-term trends such as externalisation and the use of data science, ESG integration, digital asset adoption and central bank reserves diversification.
This year we spoke face to face with chief investment officers, portfolio strategists and heads of asset classes at 81 Sovereign funds and 58 central banks, 139 institutions in total, representing USD23 trillion.*
The study provides unique insights into the investment objectives and behaviours of sovereign investors, and unearthed five key themes.
Explore five key themes:
- Inflation shock presents sovereigns with hard choices.
- External management and data science help overcome scale challenges.
- Digital assets: a disruptive technology gathering momentum.
- Rising stakes in ESG as sovereigns focus on impact.
- Renminbi allocations continue to rise, as Russia reserves freeze catalyses soul-searching about dollar reserves.
