Rhode Island taxpayers who are account owners are eligible for a deduction in computing state income tax of up to $500 (individual tax filer) or up to $1,000 (married couples filing jointly) for contributions to their CollegeBound 529 account. Any contributions which are not deductible in computing state tax due to the $500 or $1,000 maximum may be carried forward and deducted in future years (subject in each case to the same annual maximums). Rhode Island state tax deductions may be subject to recapture in certain circumstances including nonqualified withdrawals and rollovers to another state’s 529 plan. Please consult your tax advisor about your particular situation.
